Why A Hotline?

In recent years many organizations and individuals in Boulder County have heard anecdotal reports of a wide variety of bias motivated incidents. FBI reports alone show that hate crimes, which targeted victims or property as a result of bias against race, religion, sexual orientation, ethnic or national origin, or physical or mental disability, rose 8 percent in 2006.

Unfortunately, hate crimes are just the tip of the iceberg with the majority of incidents unreported or unable to be prosecuted as a hate crime or crime of any sort; bias incidents occur everyday and cause harm to the mental, emotional, spiritual and physical well-being of an individual. In order to provide support and resource referral services to individuals who experience bias-related incidents, a group of community members ans organizations have come together to form the Bias Incident Hotline Project.
